History of AEPM
The Association of Emergency Physicians of Malta (AEPM) is a non-profit-making organisation which was founded in December 2006 by a group of Emergency Physicians who had a common goal- that of ensuring that the Specialty of Emergency Medicine in Malta would achieve and maintain the highest possible standards through research, education and training for the benefit of our patients.

The Committee of the Association is made up of 7 Emergency Physicians and it is currently in its 6th term. The Presidents of the Association from 2006 to date were Mr Mario Tabone Vasallo (1 term), Dr Mary Rose Cassar (2 terms), Dr Anna Spiteri (2 terms) and Dr Patrick Farrugia (current term). At its inception the Association had 20 members but has now grown to include 51 full members and 30 associate members.

The AEPM is represented locally on the Specialist Association Committee of Malta. It is responsible for the local curriculum for EM, the EM training programme and also for the endorsement of the progression of trainees until they attain the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCST). On the international front the AEPM is affiliated with the Emergency Medicine Section and Board of the UEMS and also with the European Society of Emergency Medicine. It has contributed to the compilation of the European Curriculum for Emergency Medicine (2019) and to the European Training requirements for Emergency Medicine.
The AEPM has organised 3 large and successful conferences - in 2014 (Concepts in Evolution), 2016 (Achievements, Boundaries and Challenges) and in 2019 (Connections). Unfortunately, the 2020 AEPM symposium was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is planning its next Conference to be held in 2021.
